Desire vs Intention

Most people watch life happen instead of making life happen.

They watch the events of their life unfold, instead of making a plan and following it to conclusion.

The reason I have found for this is that people live by desire, not by intention. Let’s have a look at both of these terms briefly.

Desire:  the feeling that one would get pleasure from obtaining something

Intention: what one plans to do

One is active, the other is passive.

For Example: Ellen had a great desire to be successful as an musician and hoped that someone would discover her. Bob intended to be successful as an artist, and though he also hoped that his talent would be recognized, he also practiced several hours a day, solicited feedback on his work and attended auditions.

Desire in wanting something but doing nothing to make it happen.

Intention is wanting something and putting attention and energy on to having it.

Desire becomes intention when action is taken. Having an intention might include talking about what you want, marshalling resources to create it, reprioritising your time, and stepping out and doing all that you can do.

Brand Bubble by John Gerzema and Edward Leba

In the book The Brand Bubble, Gerzema and Leba talk about a five-stage model that reveals how today’s successful brands–and tomorrow’s–have an insatiable appetite for creativity and change.

I look at the six characteristics of a Brand as outlined in the book.

$130 milkshake… worth every penny!

I was due to go fly the little Evektor Sportstar at the local airfield (52F) to stay current and I was trying to figure the best way to do it.Evektor SportStar

About 40 minutes fly time due west is a Dairy Queen in Graham Texas.

You land at the airport and walk across the highway to the best burgers and ice-cream around.

They are right next door to a double wide that does some of the best BBQ I have ever had.

If you really want to make a day of it, they do a peach cobbler that will make you fat and happy!!

So I did it all. (Well the flying and milkshake, the BBQ is for next month.)

$130 milkshake

I got the couple of hours of flying in that I needed to to stay current.

(Had a radio failure that kept me on my toes.)

Got a DQ Double Butterfinger  Blizzard with Snickers in it.

 Thousands of calories.

$130 worth of ice cream.

Landed safely in a crosswind with no radion at one of the business untowered airports in the USA.

Walked away smiling.

Nothing like living…..priceless.

Design A Lifestyle That You’re Completely Happy With - Thomas Leonard

Thomas Leonard was the founder of Coachville, one of the pioneers of the modern coaching movement. When He just started out I use to get some of his email updates. He died in 2003. His stuff is still timeless.

IT USED TO BE that we humans were handed a life and life style , were told what to do and instructed on how to live properly — or else!

True, institutions and cultural pressures exist, but their power is waning as individuals realise that they are their own sandbox and source of strength and they have not just freedom, but actual choice!  (Freedom without choice is hardly a choice.)

The only problem is, that few of us ever had a Goal Setting 101 or Happiness 200 or Design Your Life class.  This sort of thing is just now being taught in some progressive schools, albeit sanitised so as not to offend anyone.

So, how does one design their life and lifestyle, without making the mistakes of the 50s generation of keeping ahead of the neighbors, or of the 80’s generation where acquisition, greed and flaunting one’s possessions were far more important than just being yourself.

Here are 3 things we focused on:

  • Simplify what you do have until you don’t have to manage anything about your lifestyle.

When you let go, reduce, drop and stop stuff that you’ve been doing out of habit or obligation, you’ll naturally feel more free and new ideas will have some room to find you.

  •  Get back in touch with what you most wanted to do, or enjoyed, when you are about 6 or 7 years old and experiment that some aspect of that.

This one may sound silly, but it almost always worked with my clients.  There is something that most of us gave up on at that age which is worth rediscovering.  By the way, some learning experts say that children stop learning, or stop enjoying the learning process, around that age because learning turns into a performance exercise at school, with expensive consequences for non-compliance.

  •   Change your diary.

Changing who you spend time with is one of the best, and most immediate, ways to change your life, lifestyle, priorities and even your career.  make a list of the people who you admire, would like to become more like or find fascinating.  Invite yourself in and spend time with them.  You’ll find yourself changing, without effort or ‘deciding.’

These 3 steps may not sound very exciting, but they work well.  Especially, if you want to ease into a lifestyle and life that will make you happy and fulfilled for your lifetime.

Life Design is less about identify options and making linear decisions about where to live, how to life and what to do.  Certainly, it includes these, but the first essential step in the process is for you to change, on the inside.  The above 3 steps are the beginning of that process, so that when you do make those lifestyle choices, they really are coming from you.

Opportunities

I have often heard people say:

“I am waiting for MY opportunity,”

“I am looking for an opportunity,”

“Here is an opportunity for ME,”

“You need to TAKE this opportunity.”

I don’t believe that opportunities are things to be taken, but things to be shared.

The idea of taking an opportunity holds with it a sense of somone losing something and someone winning something.

The true nature of a Win-Win situation is the sharing of the oppourtinity.

Both parties come away with a sense of being privileged and honored to work with and for each other.

Listen … everyone wants to make a buck.

Business is about making a buck, but those that live with the mind set that you can only get ahead by  taking are a little bit Gordon Gekko for the rest of us.

Opportunities are rivers, not pies. There is enough for everyone, you dont have to fight for a piece of it.

Every significant personal and business relationship I have formed in the last 20 years around the basis of win/win and shared opportunity, I still have today.

Any other relationship I didn’t feel was equitable…I have walked away from.

Life is too short to swim with the sharks.

So, pull up a deck chair, order a drink with a little umbrella, enjoy the sun, and let’s plan on taking over the world….together!!
